On August 19, 2003, the United Nations office in Baghdad was attacked by a car bomb, killing 22 people, including UN Special Envoy de Mello, and wounding more than 150 people. In December 2008, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution designating 19 August as World Humanitarian Day.

Since then, every year on this day, humanitarian workers around the world have organized a variety of commemorative activities aimed at paying tribute to aid workers who risk their lives to participate in humanitarian work and providing support to people affected by crises worldwide. Emphasizing also the current humanitarian needs and challenges, raising public awareness of humanitarian assistance operations around the world and the importance of international cooperation in this regard, and calling attention to the safety of personnel who risk their lives to participate in humanitarian assistance, as well as to the survival, welfare and dignity of those affected by wars, disasters and other crises, Pay tribute to all humanitarians and those who have given their lives in furtherance of humanitarian causes.

Every year, World Humanitarian Day has a theme, and this year’s theme is # Whatever#. Ocha’s World Humanitarian Day campaign brings the global humanitarian community together to mark the 20th anniversary of the attack on the United Nations headquarters in Baghdad, Iraq, and to demonstrate its unwavering commitment to providing humanitarian assistance to the communities it serves, no matter who, no matter where, no matter what.

Humanitarians devote themselves to nothing more than saving and protecting lives and providing the basic necessities of life; they work alongside and give hope to the communities they serve.

August 19, 2023, marks the 15th World Humanitarian Day. We come together to pay tribute to humanitarians around the world who are trying to meet the growing humanitarian needs of the world. Whether it is danger or hardship, humanitarians go to disaster areas and front lines to save and protect those in need.

The cause of humanity is a common one, and every year World Humanitarian Day seems to remind us of the need to take action to alleviate the suffering of people, animals and the planet. In times of war, conflict, climate change, pandemics and other crises, we need humanitarian action more than ever. We need all parties to coordinate and work together to protect people from their homes and address humanitarian crises.
